Winter sports melt away after postseason competitions

SCHUYLER, NEB., (Feb. 25, 2026)— The 2025-26 seasons for boys and girls basketball have officially come to an end after weeks of competitions and practices. Dozens of athletes competed in winter activities, and many teams achieved goals their own goals too.

And Then There Was One (113): Boys Wrestling
The boys wrestling team was able to qualify one wrestler for the NSAA Class B Boy’s State Wrestling tournament. Junior Andy Mateo wrestles at the 113 weight class and was able to compete at the tournament.
Mateo wrestled in three matches, with the first one being his only victory against #10 seeded Ed Minardi Of Omaha Gross Catholic High School.
He then moved onto the quarterfinals, where he lost against #2 seeded Oscar Brown of Scottsbluff. Shortly after, his season was pinned down by #8 seeded Kannen Kopetzky of Gretna East.

Six time’s the Charm: Girl’s Wrestling
The girls wrestling team was able to wrestle into six spots at state after competing at the A-2 district competition in Lincoln. Junior Yuritza Mejia (105), Senior Ester Miranda (115), Freshman Alizon Morales (140), Senior Lauren Wemhoff (145), Junior Elvia Morales (155), and Sophmore Audrie Alonso (170).
They all qualified for the NSAA Class A Girl’s State Wrestling Tournament.

Competing and Coming back: Boy’s Basketball.
The boys basketball team competed through their 3rd consecutive year with being unable to score a basketball victory. Although winless, they have been close to many wins throughout the season.
In December, the team was able to take a 12 point lead against the Tekemah Herman Tigers, which is the first time in several years that they were able to achieve a score margin difference of this size.
During the parent’s night game against the Fairbury Jeffs, the Warrior boys were able to decrease the score difference by 10, where the score went from 10-32 to 22-32 in the second half. Their season later ended at Elkhorn, where they lost against the Elkhorn Antlers with a score of 83-26.
